PBIS

Positive Behavior Intervention & Supports

What is it?

"Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports (PBIS) is a system that establishes the behavioral supports needed for all students to achieve social, emotional, and academic success.  PBIS guides schools...to create a positive school culture that is safe, respectful, and conducive to learning." - Illinois PBIS Network

What does this mean?

Schools that implement PBIS experience decreases in discipline problems and a decrease in the amount of time spent by students out of the classroom.  Overall this increases academic engagement for students.  PBIS also leads to an increased sense of school safety.  According to a study in Maryland, PBIS schools demonstrated less bullying behavior, and experienced lower levels of peer rejection for all students.  - Illinois PBIS Network

How does it work?

PBIS is a multi-tiered system aimed at supporting students across the board.
  • Tier one targets school-wide behavior expectations, such as "Be Safe", "Be Ready to Learn", etc.  The expectations for Plano High School can be seen below.  These skills are taught through direct instruction, practice, and positive reinforcement in all school settings.  At Plano High School this can be seen through our PBIS Reminders and our use of Pride Pennies.
  • Tier two targets 5-15% of student who are not succeeding with Tier 1 interventions.  These students receive additional support for various behaviors ranging from instruction in small groups to behavior plans or Check in/Check out.  Data is used to decide when a student enters and exits this tier.
  • Tier three targets 1-5% of students who are exhibiting high risk behavior.  Tier 3 plans tailor the supports that the student receives to ensure that the student experiences personal and academic success.  These plans can include highly individualized behavior plans or wraparound teams that include individuals from their home, school, and community.

This year we are trying something new!

Each quarter we will be highlighting a new issue or concern through a "PBIS Reminder."  The topics of these reminders will be determined by the PBIS team based on feedback and data we receieved the previous quarter.  These presentations will be given by teaches during their Learning Lab time school wide.  We hope to create a more positive school environment for everyone by targeting specific issues or behaviors we see.

Below you will find the presentations that we have had so far this year.  Look for these to be updated as we roll new ones out!
